De Zwarte Hond and Loer Architecten have shared p،tos of a building they recently completed in Groningen, Netherlands, that combines modern design with ceramic elements.

The architects worked together with ceramic manufacturer NBK and facade builder Bijlbouw to create samples and mock-ups to find the perfect blue-green glaze for the facade with its custom-made details.

The blue-green glaze of the ceramic details allows the building to appear as a different color in every type of weather, while the layering of color and form adds a touch of artistry that refers to the richness of Groningen’s historical buildings and the optimistic rawness of post-war architecture.

The building, which is positioned on a corner, features retail on the street level, with 41 sustainable apartments above it, built by Plegt-Vos.

The apartments each have a balcony filled with seating and plants, which complement the ceramic detailing of the building facade.
