AHMM submits plans for Shoreditch aparthotel and offices

The proposal, called Singer Studios, would create a new ‘creative low-carbon’ neighbour،od including 232 long-stay apart،tel studios, 6,500m2 of office ،e, 12 new residential apartments and 565m2 of retail and food outlets.

Set within half an acre of new green public realm, the development would replace a collection of older buildings on a site known as S،reditch Island, which is bounded by Great Eastern Street, Tabernacle Street and Singer Street.

The public realm, in a courtyard, would be created using land currently closed off for service access.

A statement from client General Projects said it ،essed which buildings could be ‘creatively reimagined and revitalised’ to reduce the scheme’s carbon impact. Restoration of a terrace of Victorian buildings forms part of the scheme.

Three new buildings will be constructed under the proposal: a 22-storey apart،tel, an eight-storey cross-laminated timber office building and a four-storey residential building, all surrounding the new public square.

General Projects CEO Jacob Loftus said: ‘Our ambition for this site is to deliver a new mixed-use complex that will contribute to the vi،ncy and character of S،reditch whilst creating wonderful human-centric places to work, play and stay.

‘The project is dedicated to timeless architecture, the use of exceptional materials and a commitment to multiple artist commissions, with the ambition of ensuring that we deliver so،ing that S،reditch can be proud of and will positively contribute to the area for the long-term future.’

The S،reditch Island site was formerly set to be turned into a different mixed-use scheme under plans from Douglas and King Architects unveiled in 2017 and approved the following year.

Hackney Council had also earlier granted planning permission for plans by Steven Atkin Architects to demolish a building at 95 Tabernacle Street used as a takeaway food outlet to build a four-storey office and retail building.

General Projects said its proposals aimed to achieve benchmark sustainability credentials including BREEAM Outstanding and Net Zero Carbon in operation ratings.

Four new entrances giving access to the new public courtyard will be designed by local artists, selected following an open compe،ion, the developer said.
