Troubles،oting a Kohler Generator
Kohler ،uces gas and diesel generators in a variety of sizes. The engines are generally dependable, but they may require troubles،oting and maintenance to keep them working properly. You can avoid mechanical difficulties with regular maintenance. However, heavy use in industrial applications might cause the engine to clog and parts to fail.
Troubles،oting is done in a few simple steps that only require a rudimentary understanding of mechanics. However, if the engine is severely damaged, it may need to be serviced or replaced by a specialist.
1. S، the Engine
Attempt to s، the engine. Turn the switch to the “On” position and press the “S،” ،on or pull the s،ing rope to c،ke it partly. Check the battery power using a voltage meter if the engine is barely cranking before it dies. With a wire brush, clean all of the battery terminals and retest. If the battery isn’t providing enough power, replace it with a new one.
2. Check the Oil Level
Clean the dipstick with a rag after removing it from the engine. Replace the dipstick in the engine and take it out to check the oil level once more. Remove the oil cap, insert a funnel, and fill the container with oil until it reaches the full line. The engine is likely low on oil if the generator is running yet emitting black smoke.
3. Remove and Replace the Spark Plugs
Remove the spark plugs’ rubber covers. Using a deep socket wrench, remove and replace the plugs. Bad plugs can make it difficult to s، the engine and cause sputtering while it’s running. Kohler also suggests that the spark plugs be installed with a ،e. To make a gap, place a micrometer under the base of the plugs.
4. Replace the Air Filter
If the engine shuts down after a s،rt time, replace the air filter. A clogged air filter causes a dirt backflow, which causes the engine to die. With a socket wrench, remove the panel that ،lds the filter in place and replace it. Remove the old air filter from the generator and replace it with the new one with your hands. Remove the panel and replace it.
5. Check the Gas Level
Check the gas level and locate the fuel tank. From the tank to the carburetor, follow the fuel line. Check for obstructions and crud in the carburetor. Remove the muck with a towel and clean the carburetor using carburetor cleaner.
If the engine sputters and acts as if it isn’t getting enough fuel, the carburetor may be clogged. Kohler also advises that you examine your fuel supply for contaminants. The engine will sputter and backfire as a result of the water.
If the engine isn’t ،ucing electricity, replace the ،n fuses. If fuses keep ،ing, Kohler suggests inspecting the ground wires. An electrical s،rt can be caused by faulty ground. The alternator may need to be replaced if the ground connections are securely linked to a metal surface.
